Often
young winemakers are keen to change but things at Lopez de Heredia are
different in so many ways. Here, not a glimpse of stainless steel, as
one thing that the inspirational Maria Jose Lopez de Heredia is keen to
do is keep making the wines as they have been made (very, very
successfully) for the last 100 years. Grape selection and winemaking
are done by hand, wines are fined with egg whites and both reds and
whites are aged only in wood with a complete disregard for popular
fashions. The minimum time spent in oak is 36 months, while the
flagship 'Tondonia’ is aged for six years and all in barrels made by
the company’s own cooper. Their style of red wines have
incredible ageing potential, keeping a fantastic depth of fruit and
complexity, while the whites are not what you might expect. The Viña
Gravonia is fresh yet sublimely mature; the white Tondonia Reserva more
akin to a classic Burgundy, with elegance, richness and depth. The
vineyards of Bosconia produce a much riper style, while Viña Tondonia
is their classic wine, produced in only the best vintages, aged to
perfection and only sold when ready. (Older vintages are available on request) Producer Website
